Am I asking for multiple spirits?
When I was younger, I used to wonder if God had seven spirits each time we prayed to be filled with the seven Spirit of God mentioned in Isaiah 11:1-2.
I even got more curious when we began to ask for the Spirit of wisdom and revelation (Ephesians 1:17), then the Spirit of grace and supplication (Zechariah 12:10). When believers pray in this manner, are we asking for different Spirits? Is this suggesting that there’s a part of the Holy Spirit that wasn’t included when I received the Holy Spirit?
I later understood from John 3:34 that God doesn’t give the Holy Spirit in portions or measures. When I received the Holy Spirit, I receive His whole person.
So what are we really praying for when we say “Lord, give me the Spirit of excellence, wisdom or revelation…”?
We’re asking that the Holy Spirit, who fully lives within us will express Himself through our everyday experience in a specific dimension. The fullness is already there, but the expression of that fullness depends on our immediate awareness, understanding, and readiness to give it free expression.
When I pray for the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, I’m asking the Holy Spirit to function in my practical, daily life as the one who opens my eyes deeper into the knowledge of God. When I ask for the Spirit of grace and supplication, I’m asking Him to move through me in intercession and dependence on God.
The idea is not to get more of God. It’s rather to let more of God flow through us.
When we pray for an excellent spirit, we are asking the Holy Spirit to function within our daily experiences as divine intelligence impressed upon our natural minds to produce answers and solutions in places where others are completely stuck.
When this happens, the spiritual man applies righteousness to his expertise in natural things. When every known natural principle has been explored and exhausted, the natural man may shrug in acceptance of the status quo.
However, the righteous man by his access to God and His wisdom and power (Romans 5:2, 1 Corinthians 1:30), goes through an beyond the same difficult places with ease, peace and joy. Not by might, not by power, but by the Spirit functioning for revelation and excellence within him (Zechariah 4:6).
So I realized I don’t have to be stuck where others are stuck. I carry a Spirit that is multidimensional and knows the answer before the question is fully formed. That’s why I still pray daily that He functions through me as that excellent spirit in your work, your decisions, your relationships, your challenges.
I’m sharing this personal note with you to say that you have the fullness of the Spirit, desire every possible expression of His fullness and let Him live through you practically.
Selah.
